FIOCRUZ – Fondation of Oswaldo Cruz Institut (Brazil)
Founded in 1900 as a pioneering initiative in Brazil, the Oswaldo Cruz Institute (IOC) is a technical and scientific unit of the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz). Over its 124 years of existence, it has become a complex that generates knowledge, products, and services in the biomedical field, aiming to meet the health needs of the Brazilian population. The IOC operates in the areas of research, technological development, and innovation, as well as in providing reference services for the diagnosis of infectious and genetic diseases and for vector control, supported by internal committees responsible for ensuring biosafety, quality, and environmental management standards.
Its structure comprises 66 laboratories dedicated to research, technological development, and innovation, focused on the study and generation of products and inputs related to various diseases. This structure also includes institutionalized Biological Collections of national and international importance, in addition to multiple reference services that support the needs of the Ministry of Health (MS), the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), and the World Health Organization (WHO), reinforcing the Institute’s strategic role in surveillance, diagnosis, and response to priority health threats in Brazil and globally.
The IOC also plays a central role in training scientists and technicians through professional education and graduate programs. Its interface with the public includes reference medical care in the areas of leprosy and hepatitis, professional training through various types of courses, and the constant updating of its institutional website.
