Anton de kom university of suriname
The Anton de Kom University of Suriname (AdeKUS) was established by Law on the 25th of June 1966 and proclaimed on the 1st of November 1968. The university consists of 7 faculties of which the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FWNW) is 1 of the last established. The first programs started in 2015 namely the undergraduate programs in Mathematics and Chemistry. In 2018, the Physics and Biology programs were started.
In November 2022, a Memory of Understanding was signed between the Adekus and the Bureau for Public Health in Suriname (BOG) to conduct joint research on vector-borne diseases. Within that framework, the Biology department of the FWNW is conducting research together with the BOG on Aedes and Anopheles mosquitoes. This also involves partnerships with the Center for Disease Control and Institute Pasteur in French Guyana to support the research. To strengthen the network in this area of science, the AdeKUS joined the WINSA in 2024
Kartika Doerdjan-Ramoutar studied Conservation Biology and her area of interest is the biological control of mosquitoes. Currently, she is working with the BOG to do research on the insecticide resistance status of Aedes aegypti mosquitoes in different areas of Suriname and advising control strategies adapted to evidence-based data. She strives to publish research data from Suriname making it available to the (scientific) community
