Medical Entomology Unit  (Guyana)

The Medical Entomology Unit within the Ministry of Health, Guyana, plays a critical role in national vector surveillance and control, supporting the vector-borne disease program for the Country. The department is skilled in mosquito identification and is currently strengthening its capacity in insecticide resistance testing, research writing, and scientific publication.

The unit is headed by Ms. Tashanna Bowman, who holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology and a Post-Graduate Diploma in Environmental Sustainable Development. She is a mosquito identification specialist and is currently pursuing a Master’s in Climate Change and Disaster Risk Management in the Caribbean. Ms. Bowman has worked within the Vector Control Services for the past seven years, during which she served as Coordinator for the Aedes-Borne Disease Program for one and a half years. She now leads the Medical Entomology Department, a position she has held since January 2nd, 2025. Ms. Bowman currently serves as the focal point for the unit’s engagement with WINSA.
